Castine

CastineThere’s a cemetery in Castine, Maine, a lovely coastal town perhaps best known for Maine Maritime Academy and a surviving crop of stately old American elms, with headstones dating back into the 18th century—the standard old headstone shape, often topped by winged skulls. Thanks to the generosity of the late Deborah Pulliam, benefactor of the Castine Historical Society, I got my hands on a couple of rubbings; these show a particular style of stonecarving that proved captivating to the point of typeface design. Castine has roman and true italic styles. OpenType features include numerous ligatures, old-style and lining figures, and full Latin. (Check out the epitaphs.) US$49.

RANDOM SIGHTING:
Lamar Pen

KIND WORDS:

“You have maintained a level of quality in the design of your various fonts that rivals the best foundries.”
—G.V., Salem OR

“The fonts you offer are quite unique and beautifully done.... Your site and ecommerce process was also a pleasure to view and to use.”
—R.M., Newbury NH

“Well done on preserving the old ways of writing—they wrote and spoke so much nicer than we do now.”
—A.K., Adelaide, S. Australia

“I'm a collector of 19th century antiques and photographs, and like to make labels and scrapbooks using fonts that fit the period of my items. I've even tried to learn the penmanship myself using dip pens... your fonts will make it so much easier!”
—P.M., Palatine IL

“Your fonts are gorgeous, and in particular, your handwriting fonts are the best I've ever seen.”
—J.H., Witny, Oxfordshire, England

Bonsai is very beautiful; the font's antiquity seems to conjure a sweet staleness of old newsprint, somehow.”
—A.T., Ontario, Canada

“The Lamar Pen font is divine. We are using it on a novel set in the eighteenth century, and the author is ecstatic.”
—J.H., London, England
