Attic Antique

Attic AntiqueFlipping through a friend’s old hardbound collection of John Burroughs nature essays one day, I thought it’d be fun to see if I could create a typeface with the same uneven, imperfect look to it. I picked and chose among various printed characters, enlarged them somewhat with an old photocopier, scanned and hand-rendered each glyph—then topped things off with a couple goofy ornaments, just for the heck of it. What I ended up with was a surprisingly legible weathered serif akin to the Century faces. The family has roman and true italic styles. OpenType features include true small capitals, old-style and lining figures, numerous ligatures, and full Latin support. US$49.

—S.E., Charlottesville VA

“All [these] typefaces are wonderful, romantic creative fonts which no serious designer could possibly overlook.”
—G.H., London, England

“The Lamar Pen font is divine. We are using it on a novel set in the eighteenth century, and the author is ecstatic.”
—J.H., London, England

“[American Scribe] is the 3rd font I have ordered from this foundry! Love them. Thanks for the good and authentic work!”
—V.B., BC, Canada

“I've never seen anyone digitize old quill-pen handwriting [like Schooner Script], warts and all. You've done a fine job.”
—R.W., Costa Mesa CA

“I took one look at American Scribe and knew it was the Declaration of Independence before reading the ad copy. You captured it perfectly.”
—B.P., Marietta OH

“I'm a collector of 19th century antiques and photographs, and like to make labels and scrapbooks using fonts that fit the period of my items. I've even tried to learn the penmanship myself using dip pens... your fonts will make it so much easier!”
—P.M., Palatine IL
